Why I Love Valentine’s Day + Tips to Make It The Best One Yet

Valentine’s Day… you either love it, hate it, or ignore it. I have always loved Valentine’s Day for as long  as I can remember, and I think that’s because I have a big belief in CELEBRATION and an even bigger belief in LOVE. Big or small I relish in any excuse I can use to over-celebrate a day, especially one dedicated to one of my favorite things… LOVE. I love to read about love, watch romantic comedies, and show all the amazing people in my life how much I love them. One thing I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older is how important it is for me to be proactive about things when I want them to be a certain way.

My most disappointing Valentine’s Day was a year when I decided not to do anything fun or celebratory and just decided to see if my husband could meet my outrageous expectations… really good idea, right? One of the best pieces of advice I have gotten while being married is, “disappointment comes from unmet expectation”. This is hands down the BEST piece of advice I have ever received. If you don’t acknowledge your own expectations or relay them to others, they will be IMPOSSIBLE to meet and you WILL be disappointed. So first thing’s first…

Recognize your expectations. Once I sat down and started thinking about it, I decided that my expectations are not only set for others on special days, but I have expectations for myself! Everyone is different, but I love doing fun little things for James on Valentines day like leaving him little notes, buying his favorite candy, buying a cheesy card (or two, or three), and smothering him with affection all day long. If I don’t do this, I end up disappointed in myself! I also have a couple REALISTIC expectations I ask of James, which brings me to my next point…

Make your expectations known! Share a couple things you would really like your significant other to do to make this day special for you! Each year a tell James I really want just two things: a heartfelt note and flowers. I love both of these things and they make me feel really special for this day, so pick 1 or 2 things that you love and know would definitely  make you feel special! It can be anything, like a back rub, jewelry, a movie night, etc. Feel free to get creative!

Have FUN with it! Since celebrating is one of my favorite things, I make sure to go all out and make the day really special for everyone! One thing I have done in the past and want to do again this year is make a bunch of valentine themed food! Pink cinnamon rolls with heart sprinkles, red velvet chex mix, pink cupcakes… whatever your heart desires! Find your thing, whether it’s cooking, decorating, or writing sweet nothings.

Now the countdown is on… 10 more days!
